Book Your Appointment Online What Are Porcelain Veneers? Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin shells of high-quality dental porcelain that are custom-designed to fit the front of your teeth. They’re carefully bonded to the surface to enhance the appearance of your teeth, creating a seamless, natural look. Each veneer is matched to the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth, ensuring a smile that looks genuine and radiant. Why Should I Get Porcelain Veneers? These veneers not only improve the appearance of your teeth but also resist stains, making them a long-lasting and durable solution. Whether you want to cover small chips, stains, or gaps, porcelain veneers are a versatile and effective option for your smile makeover in Austin. Benefits of Porcelain Veneers Porcelain veneers are perfect for treating a variety of cosmetic issues, including chips, stains, gaps, and slight misalignments. Their ability to mimic the natural look of teeth gives them a significant advantage in creating a bright, beautiful smile. Natural Appearance: Porcelain and resin compounds in the veneers mimic the natural shine and color of your teeth, providing a smile that looks completely natural. Stain Resistance: Porcelain veneers are highly resistant to stains from coffee, tea, wine, and other common causes, helping you maintain a brighter smile for years. Non-Invasive Procedure: Unlike other cosmetic treatments, porcelain veneers require minimal removal of your natural tooth enamel. This is less invasive and preserves most of your natural tooth structure. Quick Results: One of the best things about porcelain veneers is the fast results. In just a few visits, you can go from wishing for a perfect smile to confidently showcasing it. The Porcelain Veneer Process Getting porcelain veneers at Derby Dental is straightforward. Here’s how we guide you through the process: Consultation: During your consultation, we’ll discuss your smile goals and evaluate whether porcelain veneers are the best option for you. We’ll help you understand how veneers can meet your needs. Preparation: If you're eligible for veneers, we’ll carefully prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel. This ensures a proper fit for the veneers while maintaining the integrity of your teeth. Impressions: After preparing your teeth, we take precise impressions of your mouth, which are sent to a dental lab where skilled technicians create your custom veneers. Bonding: Once your veneers are ready, we’ll bond them to the front of your teeth using a special adhesive. This process ensures that your veneers stay securely in place. Adjustment: Finally, we make any necessary adjustments to ensure your bite feels natural, and your new smile is perfectly aligned... --- > Join the team at Derby Dental Texas! We will examine your damaged tooth and recommend the best procedure to save it. - Published: 2024-08-13 - Modified: 2024-08-13 - URL: https://www.derbydentaltexas.com/dental-services/general-dentistry/root-canal/ Derby Dental offers comfortable and quick root canal therapy, a common procedure to save teeth that have severe infection or decay. Our skilled dentists remove the infected pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels, to prevent further damage and pain. Without this general treatment, the tooth might need to be removed. Root canal therapy can save a tooth that would otherwise require extraction. Thanks to modern techniques, the procedure is more efficient and less painful. Many of our patients feel relief and satisfaction after their treatment. Root Canal Therapy at Derby Dental When decay or infection reaches the tooth's pulp, it can cause severe pain and swelling. The infection can spread without treatment, leading to abscesses or bone loss. Root canal therapy removes the infected pulp, stopping the infection and saving the tooth. This endodontic procedure relieves pain and restores normal function. Ignoring the problem can lead to more serious dental issues, like gum disease or tooth loss. Our root canal procedure addresses the cause of the issue, offering a long-term solution to maintain your oral health. Benefits of Root Canal Therapy Root canal therapy has many benefits. It saves your natural teeth, letting you keep your healthy smile. The procedure prevents the need for tooth extraction, which saves you time and money in the long run. It also relieves pain and infection, allowing you to chew and bite normally again. Overall, it improves your dental health and quality of life. Keeping your natural teeth is always better, as it avoids the issues that come with losing teeth. After the procedure, most people feel more confident because they can eat, talk, and smile without pain. Root Canal Procedure The procedure starts with local anesthesia to numb the area, keeping you comfortable. Our dentist then drills a small hole in the tooth and uses tiny tools to remove the infected pulp. After removing the pulp, we clean and shape the root canals. Dr. Whitehouse or Dr. Kilkelly fill and seal the canals with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. Finally, we seal the tooth with either a temporary or permanent filling. Sometimes, we place a crown on the tooth for extra protection and to restore its look. The whole process usually takes one or two visits, with each visit lasting about 60 to 90 minutes. Misconceptions About Root Canal Treatments Many people worry that root canal therapy is painful, but modern techniques and anesthesia make it nearly pain-free. Some may think that pulling a tooth is better, but it's always best to save a natural tooth when possible. Root canals have a high success rate and are a safe, effective treatment. Misunderstandings about the procedure can create unnecessary fear, so we encourage you to get accurate information from our dentists. Learning more about the process can ease your worries and help you make informed choices. Root canal therapy is an important part of dental care. Post-Procedure Care and Recovery After the procedure, you might feel some discomfort, but over-the-counter pain relievers can... --- > Derby Dental offers tooth replacement with the All On Four® implant process. Enjoy a secure new smile that feels natural. - Published: 2024-05-09 - Modified: 2024-05-10 - URL: https://www.derbydentaltexas.com/dental-services/restorative-dentistry/all-on-four/ Are you missing a full arch of teeth? Ready for a better option for tooth replacement than a removable denture? Derby Dental offers the All On Four® procedure in Austin for patients needing a complete new smile. The All On Four® process enables the majority of edentulous patients to be candidates for an implant supported denture. All On Four® will provide a stable, permanent new smile. Secured with a minimum of four strategically placed dental implants, your new cosmetic denture will support natural aesthetics and function. Are you ready to enjoy smiling again? All On Four® in Austin: what to expect. Dr. Whitehouse and Dr. Kilkelly will meet with you to evaluate your oral health condition and to discuss your oral health goals. Using 3-D digital scanning technology, we can determine if there has been bone loss or significant changes in the structure of your smile. The All On Four procedure is often the best treatment option for patients who may not be considered good candidates for traditional dental implants due to compromised bone structure. If tooth extractions are needed, this will be a part of your treatment plan that is designed to rebuild your smile in one visit. The All On Four process is designed to secure a denture with smaller implants that are strategically placed in the jaw for maximum strength and stability. The exact number of dental implants needed will depend upon the condition of your oral structure and type of denture to be placed. We will discuss this with you during your consultation and provide details on what is needed to meet your oral health needs. Your new smile is placed during one long visit. The dental implants are placed in the jaw using advanced digital technology that can guide our dental care team for exact placement according to the treatment plan. Once in place, a new temporary denture is attached and you will leave with a functional smile. The temporary will remain in place for a few months to allow the gums and soft tissues to adjust to the new denture. After this healing period, we will take new dental impressions and your permanent, custom denture will be created and placed. Implant Dentures with All On Four®: what are the benefits? Choosing the right treatment option for tooth replacement is important for a successful and lasting outcome. All On Four® was designed to allow more patients to receive implant supported dentures and enjoy the benefits of this treatment option. Key benefits to consider include: Implant supported dentures can help stabilize changes in the bone structure of the jaw after tooth loss. Dental implants offer a permanent and secure new smile without that looks and feels completely natural. Patients with implant dentures can enjoy eating all of their favorite foods and speaking with confidence. The alternative to an implant supported denture is a traditional denture. This is a removable appliance and can often have an impact on your ability to eat and speak normally. Traditional dentures... --- > The dental care team at Derby Dental is regularly featured in the local media. First, your daily routine and regular check-ups help, but you should also think about other methods. Custom mouthguards are great for keeping your smile safe. At Derby Dental, we care about the safety of our Austin patients' teeth. Custom mouthguards are one of the general dental services we offer to help protect your smile. If you play contact sports, a custom mouthguard should be at the top of your equipment list. The Protective Power of Custom Mouthguards Custom mouthguards are essential for preventing injuries and protecting your teeth during various activities. These can include playing sports, or managing teeth grinding issues and a TMJ disorder. Our dentists create these mouthguards to fit your teeth perfectly. Unlike store-bought options, dentists tailor them to your unique dental needs. This personalized approach not only gives you better protection but also ensures a comfortable fit. You can breathe and talk easily while wearing them. How Custom Mouthguards Protect Your Teeth When playing sports, custom mouthguards absorb and spread out the impact during an accident. This helps prevent trauma to your teeth and surrounding areas. It lowers the risk of fractures, dislocations, and other injuries. Custom mouthguards can also be helpful at night. For those who grind their teeth, custom night guards act as a cushion. They absorb pressure and prevent too much wear on the tooth surfaces. This guards against fractures, enamel erosion, and other grinding-related issues. Custom mouthguards can also provide proper jaw alignment and cushioning, reducing strain on your jaw joints. This helps prevent TMJ disorders from getting worse. For more information on how we treat TMJ disorders, please see TMJ Treatment. Finally, a custom mouthguard can help protect your investment in your smile. People with braces or other orthodontic devices benefit from mouthguards during physical activities. These guards protect both your teeth and orthodontic gear, ensuring your treatment's success. Maintaining Your Mouthguard Keeping your custom mouthguard clean is easy. While it may be easy to forget, it's important. Plaque and bacteria can stick to your mouthguard, raising the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Follow these simple tips to keep the guard clean and in great shape: Regular Cleaning: Clean your custom mouthguard often with mild soap and lukewarm water. This helps stop bacteria from growing and keeps it clean. Don’t use hot water, as it can change the shape of your mouthguard. Proper Storage: Store your mouthguard in a ventilated case. This allows air to circulate and keeps it safe from damage, dirt, and mold. Regular Check-Ups: Schedule regular dental check-ups to check the condition of your mouthguard. This way, you get ongoing protection and the best performance. Young patients should get a new mouthguard once a year or sports season. We customize treatments based on individual goals and oral health needs. - Published: 2024-01-22 - Modified: 2025-01-16 - URL: https://www.derbydentaltexas.com/dental-services/cosmetic-dentistry/ Having a healthy smile is always ideal, but even healthy teeth can still get flaws. This can leave a person feeling embarrassed of their smile, which takes a toll on their mental health. At Derby Dental, we value the overall well-being of our patients, not just their teeth. Fortunately we can fix stained, misshapen, cracked, or otherwise aesthetically flawed teeth. While maintaining healthy teeth and gums is our priority, we want patients to feel confident in their oral health. To that end, Dr. Erika Whitehouse and Dr. Meghan Kilkelly offer multiple cosmetic dental services. We also offer comprehensive dental services to patients in Austin and surrounding areas. Look at our options, and give us a call or request an appointment online when you’re ready to learn more. Composite Dental Veneers Porcelain veneers are great for fixing several flaws in your teeth at once. When we cover a tooth with one of these custom shells, it instantly hides any problems. Composite resin veneers can fix things like tooth stains, chips, and cracks. Many dental offices use porcelain for veneers, but this often means the dentist has to remove some healthy enamel from the tooth. At Derby Dental, we prefer no-prep composite veneers. These veneers keep more of your tooth’s natural structure intact. We can apply them in just one visit for an instant smile makeover. This method not only protects your teeth but also gives you a bright, beautiful smile. The more enamel the dentist removes, the more likely you are to have issues later on. Enamel is the strength and shield of your teeth, and once it’s gone, you can’t get it back. That’s why no-prep composite veneers are a great choice for creating a perfect smile without the extra risks. Metal-Free Dental Crowns Dental crowns are important for protecting weak teeth from more damage, but your smile shouldn’t have to look worse because of them. That’s why we usually use metal-free materials like porcelain for dental crowns. These crowns fit perfectly over a tooth to keep it safe without anyone noticing. Plus, metal-free crowns can be just as strong as metal ones! With metal-free crowns, you get the protection your teeth need while keeping your smile looking natural. They blend in with your other teeth, so you won’t have to worry about anyone seeing a difference. These crowns also help you avoid the problems that sometimes come with metal, like dark edges or allergic reactions. You can feel confident that your smile will stay bright and healthy with the added strength of a crown that looks just like a natural tooth. Cosmetic Dental Bonding If you don’t want to have a major cosmetic procedure for a few small chips, cracks, or stains, cosmetic dental bonding might be a good choice. Preventive Dental Care for Children and Adults Our dental office is cozy, friendly to kids, and welcoming to everyone in Austin, TX. Derby Dental is a place where both children and adults can relax during their visits. Preventive care is crucial for maintaining oral health. Regular dental cleanings and exams help identify issues before they become severe. Our preventive care services include fluoride treatments and sealants to protect teeth from decay. Regular check-ups can catch small problems early, saving you time and money in the long run. Dr. Whitehouse and Dr. Kilkelly also emphasize patient education, teaching proper brushing and flossing techniques. Additionally, we offer advice on diet and lifestyle habits that contribute to better oral health for older adults. Dental Cleanings Dental cleanings get rid of plaque and tartar, which can lead to cavities and gum disease. Our hygienists use special tools to clean your teeth really well and polish them to remove surface stains. We recommend getting a cleaning every six months to stop harmful bacteria from building up. Regular cleanings help prevent gum disease and make your teeth look brighter. Many patients feel fresher after a cleaning, which boosts their confidence and helps them keep up with good oral care habits. Dental Exams Exams are important for finding problems early. During an exam, we check for cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer. We use X-rays to spot issues that aren’t visible to the eye. Regular exams can help prevent more serious problems and give you a chance to ask questions. Our dentists also check the health of your gums and look for signs of infection or swelling. By examining your tongue, throat, and mouth, we can find any unusual things. Catching problems early leads to better treatment and overall health. Dental Care Tips for Children Children’s dentistry is a big part of our family practice. We use special methods to make kids feel comfortable and teach them how to brush and floss properly. Regular visits help kids build good oral habits and prevent future problems. These check-ups include cleanings to keep their teeth and gums healthy. We know kids might be scared of the dentist, so we use a gentle approach to help ease their anxiety. We make visits fun and interactive, which helps them take an interest in caring for their teeth. Getting used to dental care early on sets them up for a lifetime of good health. Teach your child to brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. You can achieve a beautiful smile without the look of metal braces. - Published: 2024-01-22 - Modified: 2025-01-16 - URL: https://www.derbydentaltexas.com/dental-services/cosmetic-dentistry/invisalign/ Having crooked teeth can make life harder. They might make you feel shy about smiling and are also tough to clean. Crooked teeth allow plaque to build up more easily along the gum line and between them. Tooth decay and infections are common issues for patients with crooked teeth. Luckily, instant orthodontics can fix these problems, and our team at Derby Dental is ready to help! Dr. Meghan Kilkelly and Dr. Erika Whitehouse use orthodontic treatments to give you a straighter, more confident smile. How Invisalign® Clear Aligners Work Instead of metal braces, Invisalign® uses clear plastic aligners to straighten your teeth. These aligners are a gentle and easy way to get the straighter teeth you’ve always wanted. It all starts with a consultation, where our dentists check your teeth and make a treatment plan just for you. With 3D imaging, we design a series of custom aligners that slowly move your teeth into place. You’ll wear each set of aligners for about one to two weeks, depending on your plan. As you switch to new aligners, you’ll notice your teeth moving closer to your perfect smile. One of the best parts of Invisalign is that their system is easy to use. The aligners are removable, so you can enjoy your favorite foods and keep your teeth clean without trouble. During your treatment, you’ll check in with our team regularly to make sure everything is going well. Our support means you won’t go through the process alone. We’ll guide you every step of the way to help you achieve a healthier, more beautiful smile. Since there are no wires or brackets to adjust, you won’t need as many checkups. You’ll visit the dentist about every six weeks to pick up new aligners and make sure your treatment is on track. What can Invisalign® Fix? Our dentists can use Invisalign to treat many common orthodontic problems, including: Crowded Teeth: Crowded teeth can lead to problems like tooth decay and gum disease. Invisalign can help by applying gentle pressure to move crowded teeth into better alignment. Gaps Between Teeth: Gaps can make you feel self-conscious and increase your risk of cavities or gum infections. Food can easily get stuck between teeth, leading to decay and bad breath. Invisalign closes these gaps to prevent these issues and more. Bite Alignment: Misaligned bites, like overbites, underbites, or crossbites, can put extra pressure on your jaw. This pressure can cause a TMJ disorder or bad teeth grinding habits. Invisalign can correct your bite and prevent these problems from getting worse. The Benefits of Invisalign® One of the main benefits of Invisalign is how comfortable it is. Unlike metal braces, Invisalign aligners consist of smooth plastic. They will be gentle on your gums and cheeks, and easy to clean. You won’t have to worry about irritation while they sit in your mouth for long periods. Another big advantage is how discreet they are. The clear aligners are nearly invisible, so you can look normal while getting... --- > Teeth bonding offers a non-invasive way to improve your smile. If you’ve ever dreamed of having a brighter, more perfect smile, cosmetic teeth bonding could be the answer. At Derby Dental, we treat every smile like a work of art, and we’re here to help you bring out your best. What is Cosmetic Teeth Bonding? Cosmetic teeth bonding, or dental bonding, is a cosmetic procedure that uses a tooth-colored resin to fix flaws in your teeth. We apply this special material to the surface of your teeth, then shape and polish it to create a smooth, natural look. This treatment helps hide small imperfections and can be done in just one visit. What to Expect During Your Dental Bonding Your journey begins with a consultation to talk about your goals. We’ll look at your teeth and gums to make sure bonding is the right choice for you. Bonding is best for minor issues, so your teeth should be in good condition overall. You shouldn’t have gum disease, cavities, or other problems that could cause the bonding to fail. Once we’re ready to start, our dentist will choose a resin that matches your natural tooth color. This helps make sure the bonded area looks seamless and blends in perfectly. The good news is, there’s very little prep needed. We apply the resin directly to your tooth, which means no drilling or reducing your tooth’s size. Next, we carefully mold and shape the resin to fix the problem areas. This part takes skill and precision to ensure the tooth looks natural. After the resin is in place, we harden it with a special light, making it strong and long-lasting. Finally, we polish the bonded tooth so it’s smooth and shiny, blending in with the rest of your teeth. Cosmetic teeth bonding is a simple, non-invasive way to improve your smile. If you’re ready to enhance your teeth, contact Derby Dental to learn more about this quick and effective treatment! Gentile on Teeth: Unlike other treatments, bonding only removes a tiny bit of enamel, keeping your tooth’s natural structure. Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments that enhances your smile. But before buying over-the-counter products, you should talk to a cosmetic dentist. Store-bought options are not as strong as professional teeth whitening from Dr. Whitehouse and Dr. Kilkelly. The good news is that teeth whitening in Austin at Derby Dental is quick and easy. After your first visit to our Austin dental office, we’ll give you a choice: in-office whitening or at-home whitening kits. KöR Teeth Whitening at Derby Dental Forget those store-bought products with weak bleach and flimsy trays. KöR uses a powerful whitening gel and custom-made trays designed just for your teeth. This means better results, less sensitivity, and the ability to tackle even the toughest stains. Because the trays are made to fit your mouth perfectly, you won’t have to worry about gum irritation. With proper care, your dazzling results can last anywhere from several months to two years. At Derby Dental, we’re all about making teeth whitening affordable, comfortable, and effective. Our process combines in-office treatments with at-home care to give you the best of both worlds. During your in-office visit, we’ll apply a strong whitening gel to your teeth and use a special UV light to activate it. This helps break down deep stains and brighten your smile. We’ll repeat this process for about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how bright you want your teeth to be. After your in-office treatment, we’ll send you home with custom trays and a professional-grade whitening gel so you can keep the whitening process going. Just follow our simple instructions, and you’ll be on your way to a stunning smile. Ask us any questions or concerns along the way, we’re here to help. Professional Vs. Store-Bought Teeth Whitening You’ve probably seen those whitening strips and kits at the store and wondered if they’re worth it. While store-bought options might seem cheaper upfront, they often end up costing more in the long run because you have to keep buying them. Plus, they’re not nearly as strong as professional products, so you might not get the results you’re hoping for. Professional whitening, like KöR, uses higher-quality products that are stronger and more effective. They’re also customized to fit your teeth perfectly, which means no splotchy or uneven results. And because they’re designed with your comfort in mind, you’re less likely to deal with sensitivity issues. Store-bought products are one-size-fits-all, which can lead to irritation and uneven whitening. So, if you’re ready for a brighter, whiter smile that lasts, professional whitening is the way to go. Restorative dentistry is like giving your mouth a makeover. Our goal is to fix and improve the health and look of your teeth. Our skilled team is ready to help restore your dental health and give you a refreshed smile. We offer dental services for tooth decay, missing teeth, gum disease, and other dental issues in Austin, Texas. Restorative Dentistry Services Dental Crowns A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged tooth. It’s a permanent option that restores the normal shape, function, and feel of your natural tooth. Crowns are often used after a root canal but are also popular for fixing cosmetic issues. Dental Implants Dental implants are a permanent solution for replacing one or more teeth. They are the most reliable long-term option when well cared for. The process involves placing a post in the jawbone through surgery, which takes a few months to heal. After healing, the dentist attaches the new tooth or teeth to the post for a secure fit. Dental Bridges A dental bridge can replace one or more missing teeth. This multi-piece restoration uses crowns to anchor the bridge to your natural teeth. The crowns on either end hold the bridge in place, filling the gap and restoring your mouth's function and appearance. Dental implants can also secure the bridge for added stability. Dentures Dentures are removable options that replace missing teeth. They help restore your bite, smile, and facial support, making them similar to natural teeth and gums. Dentures, however, need more care and repairs compared to other options. We recommend visiting us twice a year to clean and adjust them. Call us if you notice sore spots or changes in the fit. Bone Grafting To make sure dental implants work well over the long term, you need a healthy jawbone for them to attach to. Sometimes, the jawbone can weaken after losing natural teeth. In these cases, you might need a bone graft before getting dental implants. We can add artificial or donor bone material to your jawbone. After a few months, this will help strengthen the jawbone and give the implants a solid base to last for many years. Periodontal Disease Treatment Periodontal disease treatment is all about getting rid of the infection that harms your gums and jawbone. We offer deep cleaning with scaling and root planing, and sometimes medication. For more severe cases, we may suggest gum surgery to restore gum health and prevent tooth loss. TMJ Treatment TMJ treatment helps with pain and damage in the jaw joint and nearby muscles. It can relieve pain, realign the jaw, and reduce muscle stress. If you're missing teeth, don't worry because dental bridges can fill the gap. At Derby Dental, we offer dental bridges to help our Austin patients rediscover the joy of a full smile. This treatment is part of our restorative dentistry services, available to patients in Austin, Texas. Understanding the Challenge of Missing Teeth Missing teeth are more than just a cosmetic issue. They can affect how you chew and speak and even change the alignment of your remaining teeth. Gaps from missing teeth can cause problems like shifting teeth, bite issues, and jaw pain. It's not just about how your smile looks; it's also about keeping your mouth healthy and functional. Dental Bridges Dental bridges are custom-made prosthetic devices that help replace missing teeth. They act as a bridge to fill the gap created by one or more missing teeth. Bridges attach to nearby natural teeth or dental implants. Some of the most popular bridge options include: Traditional Bridges: The most common type. They have artificial teeth, called pontics, held in place by dental crowns on the nearby natural teeth. These can replace any teeth. Cantilever Bridges: Dentists use this type when there is only one natural tooth next to the gap. It uses that single tooth for support. They're best for lost front teeth. Maryland Bridges: Also known as resin-bonded bridges. These use a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the backs of the nearby teeth. This way, you don’t need crowns to hold the bridge. Implant-Supported Bridges: For a more stable and durable solution, dental implants can support the the bridge. The dental implants create a strong base for the bridge. The Benefits of Choosing Dental Bridges When you choose dental bridges, you gain more than just a complete smile. Restored Function: Dental bridges help you chew and speak better again. This helps restore the function you lost from missing teeth. Preserve Oral Health: When we fill the gaps, bridges help prevent your teeth from shifting. They also help maintain the natural alignment of your bite. This should help prevent further dental issues. Improved Looks: Dental bridges not only improve how your teeth work but also enhance the look of your mouth. This can boost your confidence and make you feel better about yourself. Prevent Jaw Joint Issue: Choosing dental bridges can help prevent temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems. When you're missing teeth, nearby teeth might move into those spaces, causing your bite to become uneven. This uneven bite can put extra pressure on your jaw joint (TMJ), which can lead to pain and problems with how your jaw works. The bridge keeps your bite aligned. Our Dental Bridge Procedure The process is straightforward. The typical procedure begins with a dental exam. Our dentist will look at your mouth and the location of the missing teeth. Then, he will give you your bridge options. Next, the dentist prepares the teeth next to the gap by shaping them to support... --- > Dental crowns can fix numerous dental issues. If you think a dental crown might be the right treatment for you, call our office to set up a visit. We provide restorative dental treatments to patients in and around Austin, Texas. Dental Crowns in Austin, TX A dental crown is a custom-made "cap" that fits over the top of a damaged or weakened tooth. These crowns can be made from materials like ceramic or zirconia, which are both strong and look natural. Our dentists may recommend a dental crown if you have one or more of the following issues: A broken tooth that needs support A missing tooth being replaced by a dental implant A severely misshapen or discolored tooth A dental bridge that needs support from nearby teeth A tooth that needs protection after a root canal A large filling with serious decay The Benefits of a Dental Crown Getting a dental crown can improve the look and health of your teeth. Crowns are versatile and can solve both cosmetic and functional issues. Some of the benefits include: Comfortable Fit: Since the crown is made using a mold of your mouth, it fits perfectly and doesn’t feel out of place. Prevents Future Problems: A crown covers and protects a damaged tooth, preventing more serious issues and saving you from costly treatments later on. Natural Appearance: The crown is customized to match the color, size, and shape of your natural teeth, boosting your confidence. Long Lasting: Dental crowns made of strong, stain-resistant porcelain can last over 15 years with proper care. Easy to Care For: Once you adjust to your crown, it feels just like a natural tooth. You don’t need any special care—just keep up with regular brushing and flossing. The Dental Crown Process Getting a dental crown is a simple process that usually takes a few visits. At your first appointment, the dentist will check your damaged tooth to see if a crown is the right solution. Then, we’ll explain the treatment plan to restore and protect your tooth. If a crown is the best option, the dentist will start by removing the damaged part of your tooth and cleaning it. They will also shave off a small layer of enamel to make room for the crown, so it fits comfortably in your mouth. Next, we’ll take impressions of your tooth and gums. These impressions help make sure the crown looks and feels like a natural tooth. We send the impressions to a local dental lab, where a technician will make a custom crown for you. While waiting for your permanent crown, the dentist will place a temporary one to protect your tooth. At your next appointment, the dentist will place your custom-made... --- > Affordable dental implants are a long-lasting solution for patients with missing teeth. The jawbone begins to weaken because it no longer has the support of the tooth roots when teeth are lost. Dentures and dental bridges only replace the visible part of your teeth, but they don’t address the bone loss. Dental implants are the only solution that replaces the roots of your teeth. They feel natural, last longer, and are better for your overall health. At Derby Dental, we handle every step of the dental implant process in-house. We make the experience smoother and more convenient for you. We also provide additional restorative dentistry procedures to new and existing patients. Dental Implants in Austin, TX A dental implant is a small titanium post that an oral surgeon places in your jawbone to serve as an artificial tooth root. Many people also use the term "dental implant" to include the abutment and the restoration. The abutment connects the implant post to the visible replacement tooth, which could be a crown, bridge, or denture. Titanium is a material that works well with the body, so the implant post fuses with the bone over time. This makes the implant as strong and stable as a natural tooth. Implants are designed to look, feel, and function just like your real teeth. The 4-Step Dental Implant Process The implant process requires visits to different specialists at other dental offices. At Derby Dental, we can handle everything in one place so it's much easier and more affordable for you. While the process takes time, the results are worth it. Here’s what to expect: Consultation: You’ll meet with our dentists to see if implants are right for you. Surgery: The dentist or surgeon inserts the implant posts into your jawbone. Healing Period: The posts fuse with the bone over a few months to create a solid foundation. Then, the dentist attaches abutments to the implants. Restoration Placement: Custom crowns, bridges, or dentures are secured to the abutments to complete your treatment. Benefits of Dental Implants While other options like dentures and bridges can replace missing teeth, dental implants offer several unique advantages. The everyday benefits include: Eat What You Want: Implants are stable and strong, so you can enjoy all your favorite foods without worry. Look Natural: Modern implant restorations will match your teeth and blend in seamlessly. Speak Clearly: Unlike dentures, implants stay in place. It will be much easier to talk without worrying about the implant slipping. Simple Care: You can take care of implants just like your natural teeth. You won't need special products or routines. The health benefits include: Bone Protection: Implants prevent the bone loss that comes with missing teeth by encouraging bone growth. Better Nutrition: With implants, you can chew foods like fresh vegetables and nuts. This can help you keep a healthy diet. Prevent Shifting Teeth: Implants fill the gaps left by missing teeth, so the rest of your teeth will stay in... --- > Our modern dentures are a non-invasive way to restore your smile after missing teeth. Types of Dentures at our Austin, TX Office Each patient’s needs are different when they experience tooth loss. That’s why Derby Dental offers three types of dentures to provide the right option for every individual. No matter which one you choose, we’ll make sure to customize it just for you. Partial Dentures Partial dentures fill the gaps between your natural teeth and can replace as many teeth as you want. The prosthetic teeth permanently sit on a gum-colored base, but the entire device is removable. Small clips connect the denture to nearby teeth. This keeps it stable and in place, so you can feel comfortable and secure. Full Dentures Full dentures can replace all your teeth in one row. These dentures rest on your gums and stay in place through natural suction or with a little denture adhesive. Full dentures can make a huge difference in how you look and help you bite and chew more easily. We'll help you enjoy a wider range of foods with dentures. Implant Dentures Implant dentures look like traditional full dentures, but they have a special feature. Dental implants will permanently anchor them to the jawbone to prevent bone loss in your jaw over time. Four to six implants are placed in the jaw, acting like new tooth roots. This gives the dentures extra strength and ensures they won’t shift when you’re eating or speaking. No matter your situation, we have a denture solution to help restore your smile and improve your life. Our Denture Process Getting dentures is a life-changing process that can greatly improve how you feel and live each day. It starts with a consultation, where our dentist checks your oral health and talks with you about what you need. This is an important step because it helps create a plan that’s just for you. Next, we take impressions of your mouth to make custom dentures that fit well and work properly. You may try temporary dentures first, so you can see how they feel and make adjustments before we finalize the fit. When your permanent dentures are ready, we’ll have a fitting to make sure they fit comfortably and work as they should. It’s important that your dentures not only look natural but also help you eat and talk with confidence. What Is TMJ Therapy? The TMJ refers to the small joints just below your ears that connect your skull to your jawbone. Every time you speak, chew, or swallow, you’re using this joint. That’s why, when something goes wrong in this area, it can cause chronic pain. Treatment for TMJ disorder (also known as TMD) will get these muscles, bones, and ligaments back in working order and free from pain again. Some common symptoms, and signs that you have a TMJ disorder, include: Jaw pain or tenderness, especially when chewing or opening your mouth Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when moving your jaw Earache or pain around the ears Frequent morning headaches or migraines Limited movement of the jaw joint Neck and shoulder pain Difficulty opening or closing the mouth fully Locking of the jaw joints; jaw stiffness Swelling on the sides of your face Changes in bite alignment or difficulty chewing Dizziness or vertigo TMJ therapy may include a combination of techniques like exercises, physical therapy, medication, oral appliances, and in severe cases, surgery. The goal of our TMJ therapy services is to alleviate your pain and improve the function of your jaw joint. Our dentists provide treatment plans that prioritize your oral and overall health. Equilibration/Occlusal Adjustments An equilibration/occlusal adjustment is a term for a minor dental procedure. During this procedure, we will slightly reshape your teeth so that the upper and lower teeth come together in a more ideal way. This treatment is best when misalignment causes parts of your teeth to experience too much pressure, leading to TMJ pain. We’ll use our comfortable and accurate digital impression system to locate these problem areas. Then, we will gently adjust them to prevent this discomfort from occurring. Your bite controls much more than you think. Your jaw joint and teeth create a precise mechanism that allows you to chew, speak, and bite. Compromised jaw function can lead to decreased mobility, potentially causing persistent pain and chronic headaches in the long term. BOTOX® Injections for TMJ While BOTOX is famous for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines in your face, it can also treat TMJ disorder. When a dentist injects BOTOX into the facial muscles, it blocks certain nerve signals from reaching these muscles. Studies show that untreated gum disease is linked to serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and even pregnancy complications. It’s also the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. But here’s the good news: when caught early, gum disease is treatable and even preventable. During every visit, we carefully check your gums for signs of trouble and work with you to create a personalized plan to stop gingivitis in its tracks. We also offer restorative treatments to replace missing teeth and repair your smile if gum disease has already caused damage. Let’s work together to protect your gums, your teeth, and your health! Periodontal Disease Treatments at Derby Dental Scaling & Root Planing Scaling and root planing may be all you need if our dentists find gum disease in its early stages. This two-step treatment is like a deep cleaning but focuses on your gum line. First, our hygienist uses special tools to remove plaque and tartar. Then, we smooth the roots of your teeth to prevent bacteria from building up again. This will also help your gums heal. Antibiotic Therapy In some cases, we use antibiotics to kill bacteria in hard-to-reach areas. During your treatment, we apply a medicine called Arestin to your gums. This slowly releases over two weeks, killing bacteria deep in the gum tissue. We can also prescribe PerioScience rinses and other products for you to use at home. These help boost the natural bacteria-fighting agents in your saliva to better fight infections. The Effects of Gum Disease Gum disease can cause serious problems if it’s not treated. The effects can get worse as the disease progresses, so it’s important to stop it before it harms your oral health. Taking preventive steps is the best way to avoid these issues. There are three stages of gum disease: gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. Regular check-ups are key because patients don’t always notice symptoms in the early stages. Gingivitis (Early Stage) Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. It happens when plaque builds up on your teeth, causing inflammation. You might notice redness, swelling, or bleeding when brushing or flossing. The good news is that you can reverse gingivitis with good oral care. Signs include: Swollen and Red Gums: Gingivitis often causes gums to look red and feel puffy. Bleeding Gums: Gums bleed easily during brushing or flossing. Periodontitis (Advanced Stage) If gingivitis isn’t treated, it can lead to periodontitis. The infection goes deeper into the tissues that support your teeth during this stage. You might experience gum recession and notice pockets forming between your teeth and gums. Bacteria causes more serious symptoms in these pockets. Call us for your treatment options today. - Published: 2024-01-22 - Modified: 2024-06-10 - URL: https://www.derbydentaltexas.com/dental-services/restorative-dentistry/sleep-apnea/ Snoring can be extremely annoying, especially if your bed partner does it loudly every single night. Not getting enough quality sleep could signal a serious sleep apnea issue for everyone. At Derby Dental, Dr. Meghan Kilkelly provides custom night guards to prevent snoring by keeping your airway open. You only have to wear them at night while you sleep. This reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, dementia, and other conditions associated with untreated sleep apnea. If you’re ready to get the quality, snore-free rest you deserve, call our dentists today for sleep apnea therapy. Our office also provides restorative dentistry treatments for patients in Austin, Texas. What is Sleep Apnea? Sleep apnea is a disorder in which a person has short but frequent cessations in breathing throughout the night. When these episodes occur, the body enters “panic mode” and partially wakes up to resume normal breathing. These disturbances are often so short that a patient doesn’t realize ever having them. The disturbances also prevents them from reaching the deep, restful stages of sleep. That’s why patients with sleep apnea don't get enough rest, even when they sleep for seven to eight hours. Often, sleep apnea occurs when tissues in the mouth and throat collapse and block the airway. Air rushing past these tissues causes them to vibrate, which produces the snoring sound. The common signs and symptoms of this sleep disorder include: Loud and chronic snoring Episodes of temporary breathing pauses during sleep Gasping or choking during sleep Restless sleep Waking up with a sore throat or dry mouth Morning headaches Excessive daytime sleepiness Difficulty concentrating A combination of irritability and fatigue Depression or mood swings High blood pressure Not all individuals with sleep apnea will exhibit all these symptoms, and some may experience different symptoms altogether. Seek medical attention if you suspect you may have obstructive sleep apnea. We have treatment options available to help improve the quality of your sleep and overall health. Common Sleep Apnea Treatment Options To begin any treatment, your primary physician must first conduct a sleep study. The sleep study will determine if you have the disorder and how much it's affecting your health. If it's a mild case, they may recommend lifestyle changes like weight loss. Avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and sedatives before bedtime can help reduce the severity of sleep apnea symptoms. Additionally, maintaining a regular sleep schedule and practicing good sleep hygiene may also be helpful. However, in more advanced cases, the physician may recommend Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. CPAP involves wearing a mask over your nose and mouth while sleeping. The machine will push a steady stream of air in and out to keep your airway open. In severe cases of sleep apnea, a doctor may recommend surgery. Oral surgery can remove excess tissue from your throat, reposition your jaw, or insert upper airway implants. Surgery can also help in cases where obesity is a contributing factor. Call our office today for more information. - Published: 2024-01-22 - Modified: 2025-01-16 - URL: https://www.derbydentaltexas.com/dental-services/general-dentistry/tooth-extraction/ Tooth extraction is a dental that can help preserve your overall oral health. If you are facing the possibility of tooth extraction, rest assured that our modern dental techniques prioritize your comfort and well-being throughout the process. Hearing that you need a tooth extraction can be alarming. However, we provide expert care with compassion and understanding at Derby Dental. This should result in a smooth process for our Austin, TX, patients. Extractions are one of the general dentistry procedures we offer to the public in Austin, Texas. Tooth Extraction as a Necessary Intervention Tooth extraction becomes necessary when a tooth is damaged, decayed, infected, or poses a threat to overall oral health. While preserving natural teeth is a priority, there are instances where extraction is the most viable solution for ensuring long-term dental wellness. Reasons for Tooth Extraction Our first priority is to try to save your natural tooth. This means that a tooth extraction is typically a last resort to protect your oral health. So, this means that there are several reasons why we may need to extract a tooth. Severe Tooth Decay: Advanced decay that destroys the tooth structure may be a reason for decay. When fillings or crowns can't fix the job, we may need to remove the tooth. Advanced Gum Disease: Periodontal disease that has led to major tooth mobility and bone loss may require extraction to prevent further spread of infection. For more information on how we diagnose and treat gum disease, please visit Periodontal disease treatment. Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth, or third molars, may become impacted (unable to fully emerge) and lead to pain or infection. Furthermore, they can damage your nearby teeth. Unfortunately, this means that you may need an extraction. Overcrowding: In orthodontic cases, we may recommend tooth extraction to reduce overcrowding and create proper alignment during braces or other treatments. Trauma or Injury: Teeth that have suffered trauma, such as fractures or extensive damage, may require extraction if the damage is beyond repair. Preparation for Orthodontic Treatment: Tooth extraction may be part of the preparation for orthodontic treatment to create space and achieve proper tooth alignment. Types of Tooth Extractions Dentists use two primary methods for tooth removal: simple extractions and surgical extractions. Understanding the differences between these types of extractions can help you prepare for the procedure and ensure a smooth recovery. Simple Extractions Simple extractions are the most common type of tooth removal and are typically performed on teeth visible above the gumline. These teeth are usually intact but must be removed due to decay, damage, crowding, or other issues. Procedure During a simple extraction, your dentist first numbs the area around the tooth using a local anesthetic. Once the area is completely numb, the dentist uses an elevator to loosen the tooth from its socket. After the tooth is loosened, forceps carefully pull it out. The process is straightforward and generally takes only a few minutes per tooth. When It’s Needed Simple extractions are recommended in several... --- > We want to help answer any questions or concerns that you have. With her, you’ll not only enjoy personalized, gentle dental care, but also warm and friendly service at the same time. She’s eager to help you feel right at home at Derby Dental, and before your first visit, you can learn more about her below. Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist? Dr. Whitehouse wanted to be a dentist for as long as she can remember. She had the same dentist her entire childhood, and she took less than ideal care of her teeth growing up, so she became very familiar with dentistry at an early age. Because her dentist was so compassionate and non-threatening, the dental office was not a scary place for her. Today, she has extensive work that needs regular maintenance and additional care. This makes her a compassionate provider who can relate to patients and allows her to explain and manage their dental needs in a nonjudgmental way. Where Did You Study Dentistry? Dr. Whitehouse received her Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology and Chemistry from Western Kentucky University, and then she earned her Doctorate in Dental Medicine from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry (which is considered to be one of the top dental programs in the US). She currently attends the prestigious Kois Center (an advanced graduate program for practicing general dentists) and completes as many hours of continuing education as her schedule will allow. She is also a certified Invisalign provider and a member of the Texas Dental Association and American Dental Association. Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do? Dr. Whitehouse and her husband, Andrew, have a young son and a daughter, so spending time with her family is her biggest priority outside of dentistry. When she can, she likes to travel so she can learn about new cultures firsthand, plus she often takes trips to provide dental care to underserved areas in the US. To relax, she loves a good puzzle or board game, and she also enjoys watching documentaries. After finishing her undergraduate studies, she decided to head south to warmer weather in Texas and hasn’t left since. As a dentist, she enjoys having the opportunity to cultivate lifelong relationships with her patients in a nurturing environment. For her, the best thing about her job is helping people feel confident in their smiles and ensuring they have optimal health. Before you get to meet her here at Derby Dental, you can start getting to know her below. Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist? After graduating with a degree in religious studies and spending time living in India, Dr. Kilkelly became a bicycle mechanic. She loved the job but knew she wanted to do something different with her life, so she thought about what she enjoyed about being a bike mechanic. She liked working with customers, solving problems, and fixing things. Additionally, many of the children living in the town where she stayed in India had severe dental needs. She wanted to be able to help alleviate the pain and suffering she saw, so she started shadowing a few local dentists. Eventually, she realized that dentistry was the perfect intersection of her interests and talents. Where Did You Study Dentistry? Dr. Kilkelly received her bachelor’s degree from Grinnell College and earned her doctorate in dental surgery at Texas A&M College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas. After receiving her dental degree, she spent an additional year in advanced training at the Hennepin County Medical Center. From 2013-2019, she worked at a local dental clinic providing care for medically compromised patients. Today, Dr. Kilkelly actively continues to further her education and has taken hundreds of hours of advanced training to ensure she can provide her patients with the best possible care. She is a member of many local study clubs, including the Texas Dental Association (TDA), American Dental Association (ADA), Capital Area Dental Society (CADS), and the American Academy of Oral Systemic Health (AAOSH). Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do? When she isn’t taking care of patients, Dr. Kilkelly likes to stay active, whether this involves mountain biking, road riding, paddleboarding, canoeing, or kayaking. Her more relaxed hobbies include cooking, reading, and sewing. She also dedicates a lot of time to mission work, providing dental care to underprivileged populations locally, nationally, and internationally. For more information, call our Derby Dental office today. - Published: 2024-01-22 - Modified: 2024-12-09 - URL: https://www.derbydentaltexas.com/our-dentist-office/our-technology/ We believe that the key to long-lasting and lifelike dental results is using the latest and most reliable technology, like our intraoral cameras, digital X-ray imaging system, and cone beam 3D scanner. These help us plan out every detail of treatment, like the optimal location of your dental implants and the type of TMJ disorder that you suffer from. To learn more about some of the gadgets that we use in our dental office, take a look below. Intraoral Cameras Intraoral cameras are small, hand-held devices that we can maneuver around your mouth to gain an up-close view of nooks and crannies located between and around teeth. They also allow us to capture still images and video footage that we can display on a large chairside monitor to better explain any oral health issues you may be facing and how our recommended treatment plan can help. Digital X-Rays In the past, dentists would use film X-rays to be able to view the area of your mouth that lies below the gum line to diagnose problems like tooth infections and impacted teeth. Today, we utilize digital technology that not only makes each examination more streamlined, but it also produces higher-quality images that reduce the chances of improper diagnosis. In addition to these benefits, digital X-rays expose patients to up to 95% less radiation than their film counterparts. 3D Cone Beam Imaging We pride ourselves on using the most cutting-edge dental technology. Our 3D cone beam imaging machine is an example of how we use the best tools with expertise to accurately diagnose and care for our patients. During a cone beam CT examination, an arm rotates around the head in a complete 360-degree rotation while capturing multiple images from different angles that are reconstructed to create a single 3D image. CEREC® Digital Impressions Messy putty impressions are a thing of the past. At Derby Dental, we utilize our CEREC digital impression system to capture a detailed, 3D digital blueprint of your mouth to send off to our dental laboratory. Using that, they’ll be able to craft a perfectly-fitted crown, bridge, denture, or mouthguard for you. The process only takes a couple of minutes to complete, too! iTero scanner Our iTero scanner enables us to take 100% digital impressions when planning treatments like dentures, crowns, and veneers. Rather than creating a physical model of a patient’s teeth by having them bite into a mold filled with gooey dental putty, we instead use a small device to scan the mouth that generates a perfect digital impression on a nearby computer. Compared to the old way, this process is faster, more accurate, and requires much less cleanup (as in none! ). --- > Our fantastic dental staff is here to help with all of your dental needs. Using X-rays allows us to see underneath the surface of your teeth and gums. As a result, we can see dental issues that our eyes may miss. It is difficult to know the true extent of any dental issue without the use of X-rays. We can catch the beginnings of tooth decay, gum disease, and other issues with X-rays. Then, our dental hygienist team will thoroughly and gently provide you with the type of cleaning you need. This will leave your smile looking and feeling fresh and healthy. If you would like more information on our patient service, please visit For patients. How Do I Know If I Have Gum Disease? Gum disease has different stages, the earliest being gingivitis, and the most progressed being periodontitis. It’s best to catch the less-developed signs of the disease (gingivitis) because this can be treated and even reversed. These include bleeding gums when brushing and flossing, chronic bad breath, and tenderness or redness of the gums. Once the disease advances to periodontitis, you may notice symptoms including gum recession (which makes the teeth look longer), pockets of pus located between the teeth and gums, and loose permanent teeth. Why Is It Important To Visit The Dentist For Routine Checkups And Cleanings? The American Dental Association, along with our entire team at Derby Dental, recommend visiting the dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning to ensure the health of your teeth and gums. Our goal at these visits is to minimize the chances that you’ll develop serious oral health problems by catching and treating them while they’re still small. By doing this, we hope to not only save our patients’ wallets from the cost of emergency invasive procedures, but to also keep our patients out of pain. How Often Should I Switch Out My Toothbrush? It’s recommended that you should change out your toothbrush once every three months, whenever you notice the bristles are beginning to fray, or after you’ve just gotten over being sick. This will prevent the accumulation of bacteria on the head of the brush that could transfer back to your mouth as well as keep your gums from being damaged. At What Age Should I Start Bringing My Child To The Dentist? The American Dental Association suggests bringing your child in for their first dental checkup by the time they turn one year old, or whenever their first tooth emerges, whichever comes first. I’m Anxious About Visiting The Dentist. Can You Help? Helping anxious and nervous patients feel more at-ease whenever they visit us is our specialty! We do whatever we can to make sure our patients are comfortable in the treatment chair, including offering nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. --- > At Derby Dental, we have a variety of dental services for our Austin patients. Preventive Dental Care in Austin, TX Family Dentistry Family dentistry covers dental care for all ages. We offer routine cleanings, fillings, fluoride treatments, and oral cancer screenings. Our focus is on preventing common dental problems to keep your teeth in great shape. Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings Daily brushing and flossing are essential, but regular dentist visits are also important. At each check-up, we examine your mouth, bite, and jaw, and screen for oral cancer. We also take diagnostic X-rays to spot small issues before they become big problems. Tooth-Colored Fillings Our dental office offers white, tooth-colored fillings that blend in with your natural teeth. Our dentist applies these fillings in one visit, shaping them by hand. They look and feel like your real teeth and can last for years. Fluoride Treatments Fluoride is found in many toothpastes and mouth rinses, but the amount varies. Based on your diet and habits, we might suggest extra fluoride treatments. Fluoride varnish helps keep your teeth strong and prevent decay. We may also use sealants on baby teeth to avoid cavities. Oral Cancer Screenings We check for oral cancer at every visit. Our team does thorough exams of your head, neck, and mouth. We use advanced technology (OralID) to detect early signs of cancer. Toothpaste & Mouthwashes Choosing the right oral care products can be overwhelming. Ask us for personalized recommendations. We can suggest the best toothpaste and mouthwash for your needs, like Prevident, MI Paste, and Perioscience Rinse/Gel. Night Guards for Bruxism If you wake up with sore teeth or jaw pain, you might be grinding your teeth while you sleep. Bruxism can harm your teeth and jaw. We make custom mouthguards and night guards to protect your teeth and jaw using digital impressions. Tooth Extractions Our dentists believe that it’s always best to retain your natural smile whenever possible. Which is why we only recommend as a last resort. However, removing a damaged tooth that is beyond repair is sometimes the best option to preserve your dental health. We prefer to keep your natural teeth whenever possible. Tooth extractions are only recommended as a last resort, usually when a tooth is too damaged to repair. We ensure you’re comfortable during the procedure and provide aftercare instructions. We’ll also discuss replacement options like dental implants. Emergency Dental Care With emergency dental care, we handle urgent issues like severe pain, broken teeth, infections, or abscesses. The cost of treating a dental emergency depends on the problem and the kind of treatment you need. Some issues might just need antibiotics, while others may need a crown or even an extraction. You'll stay awake the whole time, but you'll be so relaxed that you'll have little to no memory of your treatment. The sedative will take several hours to wear off. You'll need a ride to and from our Austin dental office. Nitrous Oxide Dental Sedation We recommend nitrous oxide for milder dental anxiety, also known as "laughing gas. " First, we place a small mask over your nose once you're in the dental chair. You'll inhale a clear and odorless gas. Within minutes, you'll feel waves of relaxation. We will adjust the gas levels to keep you safe and comfortable during your procedure. We remove the mask when we're done, and the effects will wear off quickly. You'll likely be able to drive yourself back to work or school without feeling groggy. But maintaining your new smile is crucial to prevent further discoloration. Whether you opted for in-office whitening or an at-home kit, post-treatment care is essential to preserving your results. Following your dentist’s after care instructions can help ensure your teeth whitening treatment lasts as long as possible. Avoid Staining Foods and Beverages One of the most important steps you can take is to be mindful of what you eat and drink. Foods and beverages like coffee, tea, red wine, berries, tomato sauce, and soy sauce can easily stain your teeth. If you do consume these, try drinking through a straw to minimize contact with your teeth. Rinsing your mouth with water immediately afterward can also help prevent staining. Fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots, and celery act as natural toothbrushes. Their fibrous texture helps scrub the surface of your teeth. They also stimulate saliva production, which neutralizes harmful acids and keeps your mouth clean. Practice Good Oral Hygiene Brushing twice a day and flossing daily are essential habits not just for overall oral health, but also for maintaining white teeth. Use a whitening toothpaste once or twice a week to help remove surface stains and preserve the results of your treatment. For the rest of the week, a fluoride toothpaste will help strengthen enamel and prevent decay. Stop Smoking or Using Tobacco Tobacco products are a major culprit when it comes to stained teeth. Not only does smoking tarnish your smile, but it also increases your risk of gum disease and oral cancer. Quitting smoking could not only improve your smile, but also your overall health. Consult with your dentist if you need help quitting. They can provide you with resources and support. Schedule Regular Dental Cleanings Visiting your dentist for regular cleanings helps remove plaque and tartar that can dull your newly whitened teeth. A cleaning every six months is often enough to help maintain your whitening treatment. Some patients, however, may need more frequent appointments. Your dentist can also monitor the condition of your teeth and offer professional touch-ups if needed. Consider Touch-Up Treatments Depending on your lifestyle and the method of whitening used, your results can last anywhere from a few months to a couple of years. Occasional touch-up treatments, either at home or in-office, can help maintain your desired shade. Talk to your dentist about what frequency is best for you. Stay Hydrated Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps wash away food particles and bacteria that can lead to staining. Proper hydration is also crucial to prevent dry mouth. Saliva helps prevent decay and discoloration. Water is especially helpful after consuming any potentially staining foods or drinks. Teeth Whitening in Austin, TX At Derby Dental, we are committed to helping you reach your smile goals. If you suffer from discoloration or staining, professional teeth whitening could help. While many focus on its impact on sleep, its effects on oral hygiene are significant. - Published: 2025-04-07 - Modified: 2025-04-07 - URL: https://www.derbydentaltexas.com/2025/04/07/how-sleep-apnea-affects-oral-hygiene/ - Categories: oral hygiene - Tags: Austin Dentist, oral hygiene, Sleep Apnea Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder. It involves repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. This condition affects millions of people worldwide. While many focus on its impact on sleep quality, its effects on oral hygiene are significant. Understanding this connection can help individuals manage their oral health more effectively. What is Sleep Apnea? Sleep apnea occurs when the muscles in the throat relax excessively. This relaxation causes the airway to narrow or close. As a result, breathing stops momentarily. These interruptions can happen multiple times per hour. The most common type is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Early intervention could help promote better sleep and reduce other health impacts of sleep disorders. How Sleep Apnea Affects Oral Health Sleep apnea can lead to several oral health issues. One major concern is dry mouth. People with sleep apnea often breathe through their mouths at night. This habit reduces saliva production, leading to dry mouth. Saliva plays a crucial role in oral health. It helps wash away food particles and neutralize acids. Without sufficient saliva, the risk of cavities increases. Gum disease is another concern. The lack of saliva can lead to plaque buildup. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. If not removed, it hardens into tartar. This can irritate the gums, leading to gingivitis. If untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease. Bruxism and Sleep Apnea Bruxism, or teeth grinding, often occurs in people with sleep apnea. The stress of interrupted sleep can lead to this habit. Bruxism can cause tooth wear, fractures, and jaw pain. It can also contribute to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Addressing sleep apnea may reduce bruxism symptoms. Oral Hygiene Tips for Sleep Apnea Patients Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for sleep apnea patients. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste is crucial. Flossing daily helps remove plaque between teeth. Using an antibacterial mouthwash can further reduce bacteria. Patients should also stay hydrated to combat dry mouth. Drinking water throughout the day can help. Chewing sugar-free gum can stimulate saliva production. Regular dental check-ups are vital. Dentists can monitor oral health and address issues early. They can also provide guidance on managing dry mouth and gum disease. Patients using CPAP machines or oral appliances should clean their equipment regularly. This prevents bacteria buildup, reducing the risk of oral infections. The Connection Between Sleep Apnea and Overall Health Sleep apnea affects more than just oral health. It impacts overall health significantly by increasing the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. It can also lead to daytime fatigue and cognitive impairment. Managing sleep apnea is crucial for overall well-being. Addressing oral health issues could improve quality of life. Oral appliances can help some sleep apnea patients. These devices reposition the jaw to keep the airway open. They may reduce the need for CPAP machines. Dentists trained in sleep medicine can provide these appliances. Patients should discuss this option with their healthcare provider. Understanding how sleep... --- > In certain situations with tooth decay, a dental crown becomes necessary to preserve the tooth's health and function. - Published: 2025-03-14 - Modified: 2025-03-14 - URL: https://www.derbydentaltexas.com/2025/03/14/times-a-cavity-may-need-a-dental-crown/ - Categories: Restorative Dentistry - Tags: Austin TX Dentist, Dental Crown, restorative dentistry Cavities pose a frequent challenge in dental care. They result from bacteria breaking down the tooth enamel. This process creates small holes or cavities in the teeth. Many cavities can be treated with simple fillings. However, some cavities demand more extensive interventions. In certain situations, a dental crown becomes necessary to preserve the tooth's health and function. When the Cavity is Too Large Fillings work best for small to moderate cavities. They could restore the tooth's structure by filling the decayed area. However, when a cavity grows too large, a filling may not suffice. A large cavity weakens the tooth's structure significantly. The tooth may be unable to withstand normal chewing forces. In such cases, a dental crown provides a viable solution. The crown completely covers the tooth and often restores the tooth's shape, size, and strength. The crown acts as a protective cap, shielding the remaining tooth structure from further damage and preventing the risk of fracture. When the Tooth is Fractured Cavities can weaken teeth. This weakness increases the risk of fractures. A fractured tooth presents several challenges. It can cause pain and sensitivity. It also increases the risk of further damage and infection. A dental crown could address these issues effectively. The crown encases the entire tooth and holds the damaged parts together. This often prevents the fracture from spreading and restores the tooth's functionality. Additionally, the crown protects the tooth from bacteria, which reduces the risk of infection. When There is a Root Canal Decay can sometimes reach the tooth's pulp. The pulp contains nerves and blood vessels. When decay affects the pulp, a root canal is often necessary. This procedure involves removing the infected tissue. The dentist cleans and seals the inside of the tooth. After a root canal, the tooth becomes more fragile and loses some of its natural strength. A dental crown is often recommended in these cases. The crown provides the necessary protection. It helps prevent fractures and further decay. The crown could also restore the tooth's appearance and function. When the Tooth Requires Cosmetic Improvement Cavities can affect more than just the tooth's health. They can also impact its appearance. Discoloration or structural damage can result from decay. This can affect a person's smile and confidence. Dental crowns can be made to match the color and shape of surrounding teeth. This could provide a natural and aesthetically pleasing appearance. The crown covers any discoloration or damage and often restores the tooth's original look. This could improve the patient's confidence in their smile and enhance their overall appearance. When the Tooth Needs Long-Term Protection Some teeth are more prone to future decay. This can be due to their position or previous dental work. A dental crown could provide long-term protection for these teeth. The crown covers the entire tooth and acts as a barrier against bacteria and plaque. This reduces the risk of future cavities. It also protects the tooth from physical damage. Regular dental check-ups can help monitor the crown's condition... --- > Understanding the causes, symptoms, and treatments for gum disease can empower individuals to take control of their oral health. - Published: 2025-02-27 - Modified: 2025-03-08 - URL: https://www.derbydentaltexas.com/2025/02/27/how-to-manage-gum-disease/ - Categories: Gum Disease - Tags: Austin Dentist, Gum disease, oral health Gum disease is a common problem that affects millions of people worldwide. It can range from mild gingivitis to severe periodontitis. Gum disease can cause pain, tooth loss, and even affect your overall health. The good news is that you can manage gum disease with good oral hygiene and regular dental care. Knowing the causes, symptoms, and treatments can help you take control of your oral health. What Is Gum Disease? Gum disease starts when plaque builds up on your teeth. Plaque is a sticky, colorless layer of bacteria that forms when sugars in food mix with the bacteria in your mouth. If you don’t brush and floss regularly, plaque hardens into tartar that only a dentist can remove. Tartar irritates your gums, causing inflammation and the early stage of gum disease called gingivitis. Gingivitis makes your gums red, swollen, and they might bleed when you brush or floss. It can turn into periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease that damages the tissues and bone holding your teeth in place. Signs and Symptoms of Gum Disease Catching gum disease early is key to preventing worse problems. Here are some common signs to watch for: Red, swollen, or bleeding gums when brushing or flossing Bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth that won’t go away Receding gums, which make your teeth look longer Pockets between your teeth and gums that can get infected Loose teeth or teeth that shift, changing your bite If you notice any of these symptoms, see a dentist right away. Early treatment can stop gum disease from getting worse. How to Take Care of Your Gums Good oral hygiene is the best way to manage gum disease and keep it from getting worse. Here’s what you can do: Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid hurting your gums, and replace it every 3-4 months. Floss daily to remove plaque and food from between your teeth and under your gums. Use an antiseptic mouthwash to kill bacteria and reduce plaque. Consider an electric toothbrush for a deeper clean. Why Regular Dental Visits Matter Seeing your dentist regularly is the best way to manage gum disease. Dentists can spot early signs of gum problems and clean your teeth to remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing can’t reach. If your gum disease is more advanced, your dentist might recommend a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing. This removes tartar from below your gumline and smooths the tooth roots to help your gums reattach. Regular check-ups also let your dentist keep an eye on your gum health and catch problems early. Healthy Habits for Healthy Gums Your lifestyle also plays a role in keeping your gums healthy. You should: Avoid tobacco: Smoking and chewing tobacco increase your risk of gum disease. Eat a balanced diet: Foods rich in vitamin C and calcium are great for your gums. Drink plenty of water: It helps wash away food... --- > You can trust us to help you achieve your dream smile. But while you’re enjoying all those festive treats, it’s important to take care of your teeth too. At Derby Dental in Austin, TX, we want to help you keep your smile healthy and bright all season long. Here are some easy tips to protect your teeth while still having fun during the holidays. Watch Out for Sweet Treats Holidays and sweets go hand in hand. Cookies, cakes, pies, and candy are everywhere, and it’s hard to resist them. But too much sugar can be tough on your teeth. When sugar sticks to your teeth, it mixes with bacteria in your mouth to create acid. This acid can wear down your tooth enamel and create cavities. You don’t have to skip the sweets entirely, but try to enjoy them in moderation. If you do treat yourself, make sure to brush your teeth afterward. Rinsing your mouth with water can also help wash away some of the sugar and protect your teeth if brushing isn’t an option. Choose Your Drinks Wisely Holiday drinks like hot cocoa, cider, and flavored lattes are delicious, but they’re often packed with sugar. Even drinks like wine and soda can be acidic and stain your teeth over time. Try to limit how much of these drinks you have to keep your smile healthy. If you do enjoy a sugary or acidic drink, try to drink water afterward. Water helps rinse away sugar and acid. Staying hydrated with water is also a great way to keep your mouth feeling fresh during the busy holiday season. Be Careful with Hard Foods The holidays bring out all kinds of crunchy and hard foods, like nuts, caramel candies, and hard candies. One of the best ways to keep your smile healthy and avoid expensive dental problems is by making the most of your dental insurance benefits. But here’s the thing, many people don’t realize that their dental benefits often expire at the end of the year. You could be leaving money on the table if you don't use them. Let’s talk about why it’s so important to maximize your dental benefits and how you can do it. Why Maximizing Your Benefits Matters Dental insurance is a great way to help manage the cost of dental care, but it only works if you actually use it. Most dental plans come with an annual maximum, which is the most your insurance will pay for dental services in a year. Unfortunately, you’re on the hook for any extra costs once you hit that limit. If you don’t use your benefits by the end of the year, they don’t roll over. That means you lose out on the coverage you’ve already paid for through your monthly premiums. By using your benefits wisely, you can save money on things like exams, cleanings, and fillings. Some even cover bigger procedures like crowns or surgery. Focus on Preventive Care One of the easiest ways to get the most out of your dental benefits is by focusing on preventive care. This includes things like cleanings, exams, and X-rays. The good news is that most dental plans cover these services at little to no cost to you. Regular cleanings remove plaque and tartar that cause cavities and gum disease. Exams let your dentist catch small problems early before they turn into more expensive issues. Think of it this way: a small cavity is a lot cheaper to fix than a root canal or crown. If you haven’t had your cleaning or exam yet this year, now’s the time to schedule it. Most plans cover two cleanings a year, so don’t let those benefits go to waste. Don’t Put Off Necessary Treatments If your dentist offers treatments like fillings, crowns, or even root canals, don’t wait to get them done. Many people delay dental work because they’re worried about the cost. However, your insurance will likely cover a bigger chunk of the cost if you’ve already met your deductible for the year. You can take full advantage of your benefits by scheduling these treatments before the end of the year. If you wait until next year, you might have to pay a new deductible. Plus, your treatment could end up costing more. Use Up Your Annual Maximum Another important thing to know about dental insurance is the annual maximum. This is the most your insurance will pay for dental care in a year. If you haven’t used all of your annual maximum, now’s the time to do it. Using your remaining benefits before the year ends is a smart move. It’s a great... --- > Your teeth can become more vulnerable to tooth decay. Fluoride can help protect your teeth even if you’re dealing with dry mouth. - Published: 2024-10-29 - Modified: 2025-03-09 - URL: https://www.derbydentaltexas.com/2024/10/29/fluoride-and-dry-mouth/ - Categories: oral hygiene - Tags: dry mouth, saliva Dry mouth, also called xerostomia, is a common issue as people get older. It happens when your mouth doesn’t produce enough saliva. Saliva might not seem like a big deal, but it’s super important for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. It washes away food bits, neutralizes acids, and fights bacteria. Without enough saliva, your teeth are more at risk for acid damage and tooth decay. Fortunately, fluoride can help protect your teeth even if you’re dealing with dry mouth. Why Is Saliva So Important for Your Teeth? Saliva does a lot more than you might think. It keeps your mouth clean by rinsing away food particles and bacteria. It also contains minerals that help repair your tooth enamel. Enamel can get worn down by acids from bacteria in your mouth, especially after eating sugary foods. When you have dry mouth, your teeth miss out on the protective benefits of saliva. This makes your enamel more vulnerable to acid damage and cause cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems. Patients with dry mouth often have more cavities or sensitive teeth because they don’t have that protective layer of saliva. What Causes Dry Mouth? Dry mouth can happen for a lot of reasons. One of the most common is taking certain medications. Many drugs used for things like high blood pressure, allergies, or depression can reduce saliva production. Aging is another factor. As you get older, you may produce less saliva and get dry mouth. Some medical conditions can also cause dry mouth like diabetes or Sjögren’s syndrome. Lifestyle habits can make it worse too. Smoking or chewing tobacco can reduce saliva flow. Drinking too much alcohol or caffeine can dry out your mouth even more. Make sure to notice the signs of dry mouth early so you can prevent acid damage to your teeth. How Does Fluoride Help Protect Your Teeth? Fluoride is a natural mineral that’s great for your teeth. It helps strengthen tooth enamel and protects against cavities. Fluoride helps repair areas of enamel that have been weakened by acids after a dentist applies it to your teeth. This makes your enamel stronger and more resistant to acid attacks. It'll be less likely to wear down and develop cavities. For people with dry mouth, fluoride is especially helpful because their teeth are more exposed to acid damage. Without enough saliva to wash away acids, enamel can break down faster. Using fluoride toothpaste or fluoride mouth rinses can give your teeth an extra layer of protection against decay, even if you have dry mouth. You can find fluoride in lots of dental care products, toothpaste, mouth rinses, and gels. It’s also often added to community water supplies to help reduce the risk of tooth decay. Using fluoride regularly can make a huge difference in keeping your teeth healthy. Tips for Managing Dry Mouth If you’re dealing with dry mouth, there are a few things you can do to help protect your teeth and keep your mouth feeling more comfortable:... --- > Flavored water might not be the best choice for your dental health. It offers a tasty alternative to plain water. But is it good for your teeth? Let's explore why flavored water might not be the best choice for your dental health. Understanding the impact of flavored water on your teeth can help you make better choices for your oral hygiene. What Is Flavored Water? Flavored water is water with added flavors. These flavors can come from natural or artificial sources. Some flavored waters also contain sweeteners, vitamins, or minerals. They often taste fruity and refreshing. Many people choose flavored water because it seems like a healthier option compared to sugary sodas or juices. However, the added ingredients can have hidden effects on your teeth. Flavored water is available in many varieties. Some brands market their products as vitamin-enhanced or electrolyte-infused. While these added benefits might seem appealing, they can also mask the potential harm to your dental health. It’s important to read labels and understand what you’re consuming. Acidic Nature of Flavored Water Many flavored waters are acidic. Acidity can harm your teeth. It wears down the enamel, the hard outer layer of your teeth. Once the enamel wears away, it cannot grow back. Acids in flavored water come from various sources. Citric acid is a common ingredient that adds a tangy flavor. While it enhances taste, it also lowers the pH level of the water, making it more acidic. Over time, frequent consumption of acidic beverages can erode your enamel. This erosion can make your teeth more vulnerable to decay and other dental issues. The enamel acts as a protective shield for your teeth. When it becomes thin or damaged, your teeth can become more sensitive to hot and cold foods. This sensitivity can cause discomfort and pain, affecting your overall quality of life. Sugar Content Some flavored waters contain added sugars. Sugars feed the bacteria in your mouth. These bacteria produce acids that can damage your teeth. The more sugar you consume, the more acid these bacteria produce. The sugar content in flavored water can be deceptive. Some brands use terms like "lightly sweetened" or "natural sweeteners" to make their products seem healthier. However, even small amounts of sugar can contribute to dental problems. The bacteria in your mouth thrive on sugar, producing acids that erode your enamel and lead to cavities. Gum disease is another concern. Sugary drinks can cause plaque buildup along the gum line. If not removed, plaque can harden into tartar, leading to inflammation and gum disease. This condition can cause bleeding gums, bad breath, and even tooth loss if left untreated. Artificial Sweeteners Even if flavored water contains no sugar, it might still harm your teeth. Many brands use artificial sweeteners. These sweeteners can affect your taste buds. Over time, you might crave sweeter foods and drinks. This can lead to poor eating habits and more dental issues. Artificial sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose, and stevia are common in flavored waters. While they don't contribute... --- > Root canals are not just for adults; children sometimes need them too. This treatment is not just for adults; children sometimes need root canals too. When a tooth becomes severely infected or damaged, the pulp inside the tooth can become compromised. The pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. If left untreated, the infection can spread, causing more damage and pain. Root canal therapy involves removing the infected pulp, cleaning the inside of the tooth, and sealing it to prevent further infection. Why Children Might Need Root Canals Children's teeth can suffer from decay or trauma, just like adult teeth. When this happens, the pulp inside the tooth can get infected. The pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If the pulp gets infected, it can cause significant pain and swelling. In some cases, the infection can lead to an abscess, a pocket of pus that forms at the end of the tooth's root. This can be very painful and may require immediate treatment. Root canals are a way to save the tooth and prevent the infection from spreading. Signs Your Child Might Need a Root Canal Look out for these signs that your child might need a root canal: Severe tooth pain that doesn't go away Swelling or tenderness around the tooth or gums Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks Discoloration of the tooth, such as a dark or yellowish hue Loose tooth Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth If you notice any of these signs, see a dentist right away. Early treatment can prevent further damage and save the tooth. A timely visit to the dentist can make a significant difference in the outcome of the treatment. Preparing Your Child for a Root Canal Talk to your child about the procedure to help them understand what to expect. Explain that the dentist will help their tooth feel better and that the procedure will make the pain go away. Reassure them that they will be comfortable and that the dentist will take good care of them. You can also bring a favorite toy or book to help them relax during the visit. Being calm and positive yourself can also help your child feel more at ease. After the Root Canal After the procedure, follow the dentist's instructions carefully to ensure a smooth recovery. Your child may feel some discomfort or soreness for a few days, which is normal. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage any pain. Make sure your child avoids hard or sticky foods for a few days to allow the tooth to heal properly. Encourage them to continue practicing good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing regularly. Preventing Future Problems Good oral hygiene is key to preventing future dental problems. Teach your child to brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily. It can also support gum health and protect against oral diseases like cavities and gum disease. A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients supports overall oral wellness and contributes to a confident smile. Essential Nutrients for Oral Health When you think of creating a diet plan for your smile, you must make sure that you have all the necessary nutrients. Calcium and Phosphorus Calcium and phosphorus are vital minerals for building strong teeth and enamel. They work together to maintain the structure and integrity of teeth, making them more resistant to decay. Include dairy products (like milk, yogurt, and cheese), leafy greens, nuts, and seeds in your diet to ensure you get enough calcium and phosphorus for strong teeth. Vitamin D Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and bone mineralization, including the jawbone that supports teeth. Sunlight exposure and dietary sources such as fatty fish (e. g. , salmon, mackerel), egg yolks, and fortified foods (e. g. , milk, cereal) help maintain adequate vitamin D levels for dental health. Vitamin C Vitamin C supports gum health by promoting collagen synthesis, which maintains the structure of gums and helps prevent gum disease. Include citrus fruits (like oranges and grapefruits), strawberries, bell peppers, and broccoli in your diet to ensure you get enough vitamin C for healthy gums. Fiber Fiber-rich foods stimulate saliva production, which helps neutralize acids and rinse away food particles and bacteria that can lead to cavities. Crunchy fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes (like beans and lentils) are excellent sources of fiber that support oral health. Antioxidants Antioxidants, such as vitamins A, C, and E, help protect oral tissues from damage caused by free radicals and support immune function. Colorful fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains are rich in antioxidants that contribute to overall oral health. Creating a Diet Plan for Optimal Dental Health Fruits and Vegetables: Aim to fill half your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables at each meal. These foods provide vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants essential for strong teeth and healthy gums. Lean Proteins: Include lean proteins like poultry, fish, beans, and legumes to support tissue repair and immune function. Dairy Products: Choose low-fat or fat-free dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese for calcium and phosphorus that strengthen teeth. Whole Grains: Opt for whole grains such as brown rice, whole wheat bread, and quinoa, which provide fiber to support saliva production and maintain a clean mouth environment. Healthy Fats: Include sources of healthy fats like nuts, seeds, avocados, and olive oil, which provide essential nutrients and support overall health. Limit Sugary and Acidic Foods Minimize consumption of sugary snacks, candies, sodas, and sweetened beverages that can contribute to tooth decay. Also, limit acidic foods and drinks like citrus fruits, tomatoes, and carbonated beverages, which can erode tooth enamel over time. If warm and sunny weather has you itching to book a vacation, you should not forget about your oral health. If you want to go on vacation, even a quick weekend getaway, consider visiting your dentist for a check-up first. Preventive dental care during this appointment with your dentist can allow you to enjoy your vacation without worrying about potential dental problems. Discover three reasons to schedule a dental appointment before you leave for your summer vacation when you read on. Reduce Stress with a Complete Dental Check-Up Dental patients of any age require regular care from their dentist to keep their smiles healthy. The average patient should attend two dental check-ups per year. During these appointments, a dentist cleans a patient’s teeth and examines their smiles for signs of potential dental issues. When you receive this preventive dental care before your vacation, you can feel more confident leaving for this trip, knowing that your smile is in good standing. Make sure you call your dentist as soon as you can to ensure you can book a dental check-up with plenty of time ahead of your vacation. Visiting the dentist prior to a vacation ensures that you can receive the oral healthcare your smile needs without interfering with travel plans. Lower the Chances of a Dental Emergency on Your Trip Tooth pain, loose or damaged dental work, and other dental emergencies can ruin a vacation. If you plan to visit a remote or unfamiliar area on your vacation, you may have trouble finding local dental services to address a serious and sudden dental problem. To avoid this hassle, you should take steps to reduce the risk of this scenario occurring. This means taking care of routine oral healthcare before you leave for a vacation this summer. Professional teeth cleanings remove harmful residues that might otherwise weaken your teeth and put your smile in danger. Plus, a dentist can identify cavities, gum disease, and other dental issues that might progress to emergencies without urgent dental treatment. Sometimes, events related to a vacation can increase the chances of a dental emergency. If you travel by plane, air pressure changes can trigger or worsen certain dental issues. A dentist can find these issues during an oral exam and fix them before your trip. This way, you can avoid oral discomfort that would otherwise put a damper on your trip. Smile with Confidence During Your Vacation Many people want to look their best while on vacation, especially if they intend to take photos. You may smile for pictures with confidence when you know your teeth are freshly cleaned and polished after a dental cleaning. Your dentist can also offer you advice to maintain your good oral health while away on vacation. The dentist can spot signs of gum disease and many types of cavities with this evaluation. But you might wonder why your dentist will also ask you to undergo x-ray imaging of your smile. While a visual oral exam can reveal many details about your smile, it cannot allow a dentist to see the inside of your teeth. X-ray imaging can illustrate potential issues with your dental health in greater detail, allowing for more precise diagnostics and treatment. Routine dental x-rays are perfectly safe for patients of all ages. But you can feel more comfortable pursuing this preventive oral healthcare when you know more about the advantages it can bring to your smile. Discover three reasons why dentists recommend annual dental x-rays when you read on. Identify Tooth Decay As mentioned, a dentist can spot some symptoms of cavities, like discoloration or a hole in the tooth’s surface, during a visual oral exam. But sometimes, you can form a cavity between two teeth or in another tricky spot that a dentist cannot see. Tooth decay shows up clearly in a dental x-ray. A dentist can diagnose a cavity quickly with this imaging technology. The x-ray can reveal early signs of demineralization before a cavity develops as well. This way, a dentist can intervene before you suffer this damage to your dental structure. You can preserve your natural smile with this enhanced preventive dental care. Reveal Tooth Pulp Problems Your teeth feature layers beneath the protective outer shell called enamel. The pulp, the central cavity within the tooth, is hidden by enamel. But it could still form issues that threaten your oral health. For instance, if flow within the blood vessels becomes blocked or damaged, the tooth could become non-vital. Then it could face a heightened risk of becoming infected. To ensure the tooth pulp remains healthy, they will want to evaluate it with an x-ray that can illuminate potential damage. This way, they can keep an eye on a non-vital tooth and intervene before further harm occurs. Monitor Tooth Positions The average dental patient has a full set of adult permanent teeth grown into place by the time they reach adolescence. However, a number of factors can push the teeth out of their naturally straight position. Crooked teeth can hurt smile aesthetics but also increase your risk of oral health issues. When you receive regular dental x-rays, a dentist can see changes in the position of the teeth and help you stop further alignment problems from developing. The x-ray can also show the growth of wisdom teeth, an extra set of molars that can grow in adulthood. Wisdom teeth might cause issues with your other teeth. So a dentist will want to see the progression of wisdom teeth growth and intervene with a tooth extraction before complications arise. --- > Prevent oral health issues by booking a professional teeth cleaning in Austin, TX to clean plaque and tartar from your smile. - Published: 2024-04-11 - Modified: 2025-08-25 - URL: https://www.derbydentaltexas.com/2024/04/11/dangers-of-tartar-build-up/ - Categories: oral hygiene - Tags: oral hygiene, preventive dentistry Your mouth naturally contains bacteria, which will spread across your teeth throughout your day. When this happens, bacteria create a film known as plaque that can feel gritty or fuzzy on the teeth. Plaque will allow oral bacteria to eat away at your dental structure, making the teeth weaker and therefore more prone to cavities. You can also face a higher risk of oral infections like gum disease with lingering plaque on your teeth. You remove plaque when you brush your teeth and floss every day. But if plaque does not scrub away in a timely fashion, it can harden into a substance known as tartar. Tartar will stick to your teeth and will not go away with your usual at-home oral hygiene methods. Yet it will still pose the same threat to your oral health. Instead, plaque must be removed by your dentist. Learn more about tartar and how it can affect your smile when you read responses from your dentist to frequently asked questions. How Does Plaque Become Tartar? Plaque consistently collects on your teeth, and particles from the foods you consume throughout the day can contribute to the formation of this sticky film. You brush your teeth to get rid of plaque in the mornings and in the evenings. Plaque can harden into tartar if it remains on your smile for 24 to 72 hours. Some underlying factors, like dry mouth, might make plaque become tartar at a faster rate. Discuss your risk of tartar formation with your dentist for optimal preventive care. What Makes Tartar Dangerous for Your Smile? Tartar poses a threat to your oral health because it spreads and breeds oral bacteria just like plaque. Then bacteria can erode your dental structure, cause tooth decay, irritate the gum tissue, and give you an oral infection. All of these issues can lead to pain or discomfort as well as irreversible harm to your smile. And it can these concerns are even more likely because hard tartar can make completing your oral hygiene routine more difficult. So make sure you get rid of this calcified material on your teeth as soon as possible. Does tartar cause tooth decay? Yes, tartar can contribute to tooth decay. Here's how the process works: Plaque formation: Bacteria in your mouth mix with food and drink to form a sticky film called plaque. Acid production: The bacteria in plaque feed on sugars and starches and produce acids. These acids attack your tooth enamel, the hard outer layer that protects your teeth. Plaque hardens into tartar: If plaque is not removed through daily brushing and flossing, it can harden into a tough, calcified substance called tartar (or dental calculus). Tartar provides a hiding place for bacteria: Tartar creates a rough surface that traps more plaque and bacteria, making it much harder to clean your teeth. The acids from the bacteria continue to eat away at your enamel, leading to tiny holes or openings, which are the first stage of a cavity. This pain might fade quickly once food or drink no longer touches the tooth. But the discomfort can be horrible enough to affect your daily life. Sometimes tooth sensitivity can be temporary, such as when you receive a new dental filling or undergo teeth whitening treatment. But in most cases, sensitive teeth develop due to serious damage to a tooth’s structure that will require treatment from a dentist to fix. If your teeth feel sensitive, do not delay scheduling a dental evaluation to diagnose and treat this symptom. You may feel more at ease when you know more about the importance of urgent dental treatment for sensitivity. Learn details about where tooth sensitivity comes from and how to treat this oral discomfort when you read on. What Causes Tooth Sensitivity? You might realize that tooth sensitivity involves an external trigger, such as food. The pain occurs when the stimulus touches an exposed nerve in a tooth. A healthy dental patient has strong enamel, an outer shell over the tooth that covers nerves in your tooth’s interior. Your teeth might become sensitive when the enamel sustains some type of damage that makes it thinner or weaker. Then these nerves become exposed and vulnerable to stimulation that will generate pain signals. Enamel damage can develop in many ways, including: Acidic diet: lingering acid from the foods and beverages you consume will erode your tooth enamel over time. Skipped oral hygiene: if you do not brush your teeth or floss properly, plaque and oral bacteria will stick to your smile and eat away at your dental structure. Harsh teeth brushing: brushing your teeth too hard or with firm-bristled brushes can irritate the enamel and cause sensitivity pain. Underlying medical problems: certain conditions like acid reflux will introduce stomach acid to the mouth that can hurt your teeth. Teeth grinding: excess pressure from clenching or grinding your teeth can wear down the enamel and reveal underlying nerves. Tooth injury: a crack or chip in your tooth will create a vulnerable spot in your dental structure that can leave you in pain. How Can I Find Relief from Tooth Sensitivity Pain? While you can take steps to prevent tooth sensitivity, it is sometimes unavoidable. If you feel tooth sensitivity pain, you will want to talk to a dentist to alleviate it. Treatment for sensitive teeth will depend on its cause, but your dentist might recommend: Desensitizing toothpaste: this oral hygiene product contains ingredients that block exposed nerves from transmitting pain signals when stimulated. Dental filling: if a cavity causes your tooth sensitivity, a dentist will remove the decay and fill the resulting hole with composite resin to restore the tooth’s structure and stop tooth sensitivity. Porcelain veneers: cosmetic dental veneers will cover weakened enamel on the front of a tooth, relieving tooth sensitivity while also enhancing the smile’s appearance. Dental crowns: the dentist... --- ---
