Dental Exams & Cleanings

Visiting our office for professional exams and cleanings is vital in order to maintain good oral health.

Even the most diligent at-home oral hygiene routine isn’t enough to ensure that you and your family will experience the best oral health possible.

In addition to brushing and flossing every day, there’s one other extremely important item that you and your family should do to ensure your good oral health: Visit your dentist on a regular basis for professional exams & cleanings.

Dr. Whitehouse encourages her Austin, TX area patients to come in at least twice a year for exams & cleanings, although some patients may need to come in more frequently.

What’s Included In Your Exam & Cleaning

Visual Examination

Both your dentist and your hygienist will perform a thorough visual examination of your teeth and gums, checking for signs of tooth decay or gum disease. This visual exam will include an assessment of any existing dental work, such as fillings and crowns.

Cancer Screening

Dr. Whitehouse will perform a special exam to check for any signs of oral cancer that might be present.

Gum Disease Exam

During some appointments, your hygienist may measure the depth of gum pockets that form around teeth. When pockets are particularly deep, it may be an indication of gum disease.

Mouth X-Ray

During some visits (whenever necessary), your hygienist will take X-rays of your mouth.

Clean & Polish Teeth

Your hygienist will thoroughly clean and polish your teeth.

Why It’s Important to Schedule Regular Exams & Cleanings

It’s impossible to remove all the plaque and tartar that build up on teeth by just brushing and flossing at home. All of that built-up material that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. To remove that buildup, you’ll need the help of a professional dental hygienist.
