Dental Exams & Cleanings

Visiting our office for professional exams and cleanings is vital in order to maintain good oral health.

Even the most diligent at-home oral hygiene routine isn’t enough to ensure that you and your family will experience the best oral health possible.

In addition to brushing and flossing every day, there’s one other extremely important item that you and your family should do to ensure good oral health: Visit your dentist on a regular basis for professional exams & cleanings.

At each check-up, we perform a thorough exam of the entire mouth, bit, jaw, and screen for oral cancer. This includes getting periodic diagnostic X-rays that help us catch small changes in the mouth early, before they can be detected by the naked eye.

We at Derby Dental encourage our Austin, TX area patients to come in at least twice a year for exams & cleanings.

What’s Included In Your Exam & Cleaning

Visual Examination

Both your dentist and hygienist will perform a thorough visual examination of your teeth, gums, and bite checking for signs of disease. This visual exam will include an assessment of all hard and soft tissues in the mouth, as well as any existing dental work.

Oral Cancer Screening

Your dentist and hygienist team will perform a special screening exam to check for signs of oral cancer. At Derby Dental, we also utilize an advanced screening device annually called OralID to detect early changes at the cellular level.

Evaluation of Gum Health

Your hygienist will evaluate the health of your gums based on pocket depth measurements and bleeding around teeth. Pocket depths more than 3mm and bleeding around the teeth can be an indication of gum disease.

Diagnostic X-Ray

Dental X-rays help aid in the comprehensive diagnosis of oral conditions like tooth decay, bone loss, infections, and abnormalities in the jaw; these conditions can be missed without the necessary X-rays.

Clean & Polish Teeth

Your hygienist will thoroughly clean and polish your teeth.

Why It’s Important to Schedule Regular Exams & Cleanings

It’s impossible to remove all the plaque and tartar that build up on teeth by just brushing and flossing at home. All of that built-up material that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. To remove that buildup, you’ll need the help of a professional dental hygienist.
