Inhaled Minimal Sedation (Nitrous Oxide)
“Laughing Gas” has long been used in dental practices. During inhaled sedation, a mask is placed over your nose and you breathe naturally. The nitrous oxide helps you relax and makes the appointment fly by, but you are still awake and can interact with your dentist and care team. Inhaled sedation wears off very quickly so you can drive yourself to and from your appointment.
Oral Conscious Sedation
With oral sedation, medication is given about ½ hour to one hour before the start of your procedure. It allows you to complete your appointment with a manageable level of anxiety, with little memory of the appointment afterwards. You may be drowsy, but you will still be awake and can communicate with your dentist and care team. Oral sedation lasts from two to four hours after the appointment. You must have a ride to take you home after the procedure and you should not drive for another 12 hours.
Level 1 Sedation
Level 1 sedation consists of a combination of both Nitrous Oxide and oral sedation. It is very effective for patients with severe anxiety or for patients who are undergoing several procedures in one session.
